This is the first step to succeeding as an Instagram blogger. Ask yourself some pivotal questions, such as, ‘what do I want to blog about?’ ‘What are my interests?’ before you open an account.  By choosing a niche, you tell your followers and potential followers what kind of content they’ll find in your space. You are giving them a reason to follow you.

Many who started blogging about everything lost followers in the long run because they were not focused. Choosing a niche helps you stay focused and retain your followership.

While you can write about different content or niche later, it’s ideal to start with a niche: something you are passionate about. There are plenty of niches out there, some are crowded, and some are yet to be explored. There are other niches you can explore. However, as I already mentioned, many of these niches are crowded. Why you might have a passion for a particular niche, it is important to consider some important factors. Some niches would be almost impossible to make waves in because they’re crowded. I’ll advise that you do diligent research; look for a niche that is not already crowded, and imprint your footprint.

2. Create an Instagram Account

Now that you have picked a niche, your next step to becoming a blogger on Instagram is to open an Instagram account. However, it’s important to create a creator’s account when creating an account on Instagram due to its many benefits.

What are the benefits of opening a Creator Instagram account?

A creator account will give you unlimited opportunities as an Instagram blogger because it was designed specifically for high-profile people, including bloggers and influencers. With a creator account, you will be able to promote posts, create shoppable posts, link e-mail with direct messages, add links to your Instagram stories, use the swipe up feature to refer followers to an affiliate website, and see how your post is doing through Instagram Insight, a kind of analytic.

First, download the Instagram app on your phone if you don’t have it or go to

Enter your email address or phone number, full name, username and password. Click on sign up.

Enter your real date of birth and click on next. A code will be sent to your email. Go to your email to retrieve the code, enter it, and click next.

You can add other information later and change your username name to a suitable one later on.

How to switch to a creator’s account

Once you have created an account, you can easily switch to a creator account from a personal account.

Click on the ‘Profile’ icon on the top right of your screen.

Scroll down and click on ‘Setting’ (the coglike icon)

On your left-hand side, scroll down immediately after ‘help’ and click on ‘Switch to Professional Account’.

Click on ‘Creator’ to begin.

After that, Instagram will ask you to choose the category you fall under as a creator. Choose the business category.

Lastly, you will be asked to confirm your switch. Click on confirm. Wala! You are good to go.

Create an enticing bio (profile photo, snippets and highlights)

An Instagram bio allows users to sell themselves to potential followers with just a maximum of 150 characters. Is your bio persuasive enough? When instagrammers land on your page, perhaps through an #hashtag, your profile picture and bio space encompass the majority of the screen. Are they compelled to stay or do they just linger for a few minutes and continue to scroll?

Your bio should capture the attention of other users; it should make them want to follow you. It should make them feel like they would miss a lot if they did not follow you. Instagrammers see three things immediately after they get to your page: your profile photo, your short snippets, and highlights. Do not joke with these three things.

One way you can create an attractive/captivating bio is by using a top-notch profile picture, a picture that immediately captures the user who accidentally finds himself/herself on your page. A picture that makes him want to click or zoom out. Use a personal profile photo and not a logo. Remember that your followers want to see you and connect with your personality, not a logo. Also, you should make good use of the bio. Tell the user who you are and what they stand to benefit if he follows you with that little word space.

After creating an enticing bio, it’s time to plan your Instagram blog content. The planning stage is the stage where you need to sit and think about what shape your Instagram feed will take. As a blogger on Instagram who intends to work with top brands, you have to invest in your feed.

Instagram feed is your blog; you should focus on making your feed attractive to the eyes. The feed needs strategy and planning.

There are three important factors to consider during the planning stage: the design (colour scheme, the grid layout and the border) and the image.

Source for high-quality photos

Let’s talk about the kind of images. The quality of the images on your feed determines if anyone will follow your blog. The image quality influences the decision of the user. The picture should catch the eye and make them want to see more: tap on your username, look at your profile and then follow you.

If you have a good phone camera, you can take nice photos that suit your caption; if not, you can use a quality camera, and if this isn’t an option, you can always source photos from sites like Unsplash, Pixabay, Pixel, etc. Some of these sites allow users to use their pictures for free. Others, you might pay a little or acknowledge them. Always use a royalty-free image to protect yourself against a wide variety of lawsuits. You don’t want to get sued.

Design your feed

As a blogger on Instagram, it is extremely important that you design your feed. Because Instagram feed themes play a massive role in increasing your followers, it’s important that you make them as attractive as possible. Imagine that you bump into someone’s feed, or you are just exploring a hashtag feed, and a photo catches your eye, are you not forced to follow them or double tap on the image?

There are three important aspects of the Instagram feed design: colour scheme, grid layout and border pattern.

 The colour scheme

Colour schemes are important. For anyone hoping to be a blogger on Instagram or for personal branding, they are virtually essential. They help draw the attention of brands to your profile and set a cohesive tone for your brand. Many bloggers on Instagram like to blend colours. A Black and white theme, for instance, is the most common colour used on Instagram. Some feeds use neural shades with a pop of colour in every photo.  Others use several shades of similar colour or a combination of pink, blue, and even grey.

When creating an Instagram feed, make the overall look to have a base colour like white that will pull the theme together. Choose a few colours, something calm; it should fit your brand style, and when editing, stick to your colours and be consistent. You have to decide on colour now and ensure that all the photos you upload for your Instagram feed have the same colour.

A consistent look increases brand awareness and trust in your brand. Curate colours so that each individual photo on your feed would attract a user. Make your feed virtually appealing and fun. I recommend that you purchase a preset for that purpose. In fact, do not post any pictures until you have purchased a preset. The Grid layout

The next step after the colour scheme is the layout. How do you want your feed to look? They say how you design your grid will influence which of your photo will stand out. Use the grid to capture the eye of your potential follower and make them want to stay for long.

Even if your photos are high-definition photos, your feed will look unattractive if you don’t use a certain layout. Ask yourself questions like:

What attracts me to someone’s post?

What makes me want to stick around and follow them?

If you can answer those questions sincerely, you can design a feed that captivates and speaks to everyone.

Across the Grid

This is something rare but beautiful. Across the grid is a way of slicing up your picture with a special tool into three equal parts.  It makes the feed look clean, organized and perfectly planned.

The Rule of Third

The rule of thirds, also known as horizontal lines, is one of the most fabulous themes or layouts I have seen on Instagram. You post three consecutive photos with the same filter and subject to achieve this layout.

The Checkerboard

Do the checkerboard or tile theme by alternating quotes with images. You can alternate quotes with two photo ideas and people mixed with the background.


You can slice your photo so that it will look like a puzzle. You don’t need to slice all your photos; however, you can do that for a special occasion; perhaps you want to make a sort of announcement or draw your followers’ attention to a particular event.

Vertical lines

This layout is very common on Instagram. This layout makes your Instagram feed look organized. The trick is to use the middle feed to stand out while you post content that is in line with your overall theme.


Borders help you bring certain photos to light. You can take or source photos in square or rectangle format. You can either use black or white border themes. Many bloggers on Instagram who use borders make the middle photo have an extra-wide border, drawing the users’ attention. That is the post you can put your CTA, for instance, links to sponsored posts.

Black borders, for example, make your feed neat and organized and have the look of a page from a magazine. Some prefer the white borders; others love to mix white and black.

4. Write your first Instagram blog post

Your journey as a blogger on Instagram only just began. An Instagram blog post, also known as a caption, is where the actual blogging takes place. Whatever format or shape the overall shape of your feed takes, always think twice when writing the first line, also known as call-to-action line. 

Think of the first line as your heading or headlines. For an actual website, the heading makes or mars a post; it determines if the users or followers will click on the post when they see it on search engines. Bloggers make sure that their headlines grab the visitors’ attention, arouse interest, decide and make them take action, you too should follow the same principle. You might ask an intriguing question, make a statement, say something funny or share a controversial comment. There are so many ways to do it.

Take a look at that post you have written again. Is it something that makes you want to take action? If it isn’t, you may need to rewrite it until you get it right.

When writing your Instagram post, another important part you must remember is to add a call to action (CTA). CTA could be to ask users to follow you for more tips on something you have written, double-tap to love your post, share their view on the subject you discussed, tag a friend or friends and in later times, ask them to check out the link in your bio for more information or to buy a product you recommend.

In addition, always break your texts into lines. When your content is muddled up, it’s difficult to read. People tend to lose interest in content when it’s too long or when there are no line breaks. Add lines for easy readership.

5. Use Instagram Stories

As a blogger on Instagram, you should know that Stories are one of the ways you can boost engagement on Instagram. Stories help you connect and engage with your target audience. Currently, over 500 million users are creating and watching Instagram Stories on their mobile phones daily. 58% have said they become more interested in brands and products after seeing stories about them.

You can add sponsored links to your Instagram stories to boost sales. A recent report claimed that 29% of users have actually visited a website to buy a product after seeing it in a story. In the past, only creators with 10,000 followers and above could access this feature; however, everyone can now add links to their stories.

Apart from links, you can add hashtags to your stories. Virtually anybody can add hashtags to IG Stories. Use hashtags to expand your potential reach beyond your follower list.

Hashtags are a fun way to maximize your reach on Instagram. We use hashtags all the time. A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#). When used strategically, hashtags can put your content in front of a bigger audience, raise awareness about your brand, target specific people, and so much more (target audience).

To use hashtags to your advantage, you can check out what your competitors are doing. Spy on them. I always say this. You cannot be like your competitors or outdo them if you don’t spy. The spy technique has worked for many big brands. So, check out which hashtags your competition and followers, including brands you want to notice you are using, and use the ones relevant to your posts.

7. Create branded hashtags

Basically, this is the most important thing you can do for your brand as a blogger on Instagram. Branded hashtags contain the name of your brand. As a blogger on Instagram, branded hashtags help increase your presence on Instagram. If a user puts your branded hashtags inside his/her post, they are increasing your presence on social media.

A branded hashtag may contain your brand name, blog name or slogan. You can use it to connect and communicate with people who love your brand or blog. Because users can follow and can see these posts in their news feed without following each individual creator’s hashtags, it can grow your blog visibility quickly and effectively.

If you interact with other instagrammers, there is a better chance that you will grow your page within a short time. When you interact with a user on Instagram, she is more likely to check out your profile and, eventually, your feed. If she likes what he sees, they will follow you back, like or leave a comment on your posts.

You can start by interacting with the followers of Instagram bloggers in your niche. Like their comments, engage them by commenting on their posts, double-tapping on their posts (as many posts as possible) to grab their attention, and then follow them so that they can reciprocate by following back. As a blogger on Instagram, I have used this interaction method, and it gave me a number of active followers.

9. Use Geolocation Targeting

Research shows that Instagram posts with geolocation tagging receive 79% more engagement than those without geotags.

Geotagging can help you to boost discoverability. An Instagram geotag is simply a geographic location tagged in your Instagram posts and stories. Adding geotag to your post allows that post to live in the tagged location; it increases your chances of getting discovered.

Geotags can help build a community with local instagrammers. Geotagging your location allows bloggers to grow their audience. For instance, when a local instagrammer searches for a geotag, she can stumble on your post and if the user likes what you posted, you might gain a new follower.
