Yes, artists and writers may soon go extinct due to the ongoing invasion of AI technology, and there is still speculation as to what will happen to portfolio managers and investment bankers. The thing is that they are known to use AI as a tool to make investment decisions. That may make them safe because AI seems to help them. Unless artificial intelligence determines that they are unnecessary and a burden.
In fact, it could even be the software engineers and product designers who decide that AI can do a better job without human interference. Products may soon become available that completely sidestep portfolio managers, allowing investors to employ AI directly.
But this article is not about portfolio managers and investment bankers; it is about professions that AI will not soon take over. Let us discuss.
Jobs That AI Cannot Do
Medicine And Nursing
To be sure, AI already has a place in medical practice. It is currently used to make diagnoses by analyzing information about patient symptoms and comparing that to its extensive database. AI can make diagnoses a lot quicker than human doctors can.
But doctors and nurses are safe because patient care is a lot more than just making diagnosis. AI machines that can cut a person open and perform surgeries are not readily available, and AI robots that can speak empathetically to patients, reassuring them about their chances of recovery, do not exist.
Patients still like to look into their doctor’s eyes as they are about to undergo treatment, and they still like to laugh at their lame jokes. Patients still like to feel their doctors’ hands and hear their voices.
Medical practice is still a very physical thing, and AI does not yet have the ability to replicate this. For now, at least.
Farming
AI does not plant corn, wheat, or any other crop. It is focused on how to win wars and make money for investment firms. It has no time for agriculture. Therefore, employment in agriculture is quite safe. In fact, it is anticipated that entrepreneurs will find a safe haven in agriculture—not in the traditional way of farming, but in new and improved systems like vertical farming, aquaponics, poultry farming, and fish farming.
Even if AI were to start producing food, there would still be enough hunger in the world to maintain demand for the food produced by human farmers.
Sports
Footballers, basketball players, tennis pros, and all other sportsmen and women, including those in motorsports, are quite safe. AI could have its own platform for simulated sports, and it could become big, but not bigger than the World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, or the Super Bowl.
Sports is more than a physical activity; it is history being made in the present. Drawing inspiration from the legends of the past, players are making an effort to attain legendary status themselves.
Sports clubs are historical institutions, and every season is a log in an external database. It does not seem likely that AI will change that.
Theatre Performers
Many people have never been inside a theatre; they just watch movies on their phones. Yet, it has not affected this industry. It seems that theatre was not intended for everyone; just for the higher classes of people like the King of Norway, and other highly refined people around the world.
Therefore, the theatre has thrived for many decades without being popular among the masses, and it seems very safe to say that it will continue to be so. It has its own audience, and they are not interested in whatever AI can conjure up.
Opera singers, Ballet dancers, and others in the category of theatre performers have nothing to worry about from AI; their jobs are safe.
Actors
AI will make movies – there is no doubt about that. It will eventually have channels dedicated to its simulated movies and series. However, it is unlikely that audiences are going to prefer simulated movies to real ones.
People are just too loyal to their favourite actors, and they will likely choose to watch movies in which they feature. AI movies which feature clones of real actors are likely to result in lawsuits, and AI makers are already aware of this.
For the sake of emphasis, please note that AI may make some very good movies, but people may not choose them. Another important point to consider is the avenues via which movies are advertised. Those channels are mostly controlled by people, and those people are motivated by money.
It takes a lot of money to market a movie successfully. Unless the strings are tied up in ways that we cannot see at the moment, it does not seem likely that AI will take over the movie industry.
Construction and Realty
Building and managing buildings will continue to be a lucrative business because AI cannot conjure up places for people to live. The human population continues to rise every year, and there is no indication that this will slow down, or reverse any time soon.
Therefore, there will continue to be demand for houses, offices, meeting places, shopping malls, and so on.
This means that workers in the construction and real estate industries probably have nothing to worry about from AI; it seems unlikely that it will affect their jobs negatively.
Restaurateurs
People will continue to need food, therefore, restaurants will continue to stay open. Besides, restaurants are more than just places to eat. They are romantic—ideal places to propose. As long as AI does not find a way to outlaw dating and marriage, it seems likely that people will continue to go to restaurants. Even if AI does replace marriage, it will not too quickly remove family and friendship. Restaurants remain favourite places for families and friends to spend time together, to celebrate life, and to celebrate wins in their careers.
Restaurants can also be a kind of social meeting point for people of a certain social status. AI is never going to remove vanity from humanity, which automatically means that restaurants will continue to thrive. If you want to stay safe from AI, start a restaurant.
Hoteliers
Hoteliers are in a similar industry to restaurateurs; they cater to people in a hospitable way. Hotels are places where people go to spend their honeymoons. They are also the places where people stay when they are away from their homes—for business or pleasure.
Businesspeople cannot do without hotels. Vacationing couples and families also need hotels. Unfaithful husbands and wives also need hotels.
Hotels will therefore continue to exist and to thrive. Getting a job in a hotel will most likely be a very good career choice – one that will not be blown away by the AI storm.
Educators
Educators will continue to be relevant because people will continue to need education. AI can process information a lot faster than humans can. But it took humans to create AI, and so educators will be needed to prepare the minds that will create the next big thing after AI.
Besides, all those jobs and industries that are not doomed by the coming of AI will need more people. Those people will be trained by educators.
It is foreseeable that AI will get a place in education, but it is not quite likely that educators will be replaced entirely by AI.
Military
With the proliferation of AI comes the need to urgently guard against it; every country will need to strengthen its defences.
This will mean improving its technology, including getting the most powerful AI it can get its hands on. But it would be stupid to depend solely on AI, which is why every country will need to increase the number of military personnel it can deploy.
The military is therefore a good place to find employment because AI will not be trusted to replace humans in this field. An enemy would only need to find a way to compromise AI or other associated technologies in order to bring a country to its knees.
Jobs that are Safe from AI: The Bottom Line
The jobs highlighted above are those that will most likely not be erased completely by the proliferation of AI. However, this article belies the fragility of the world’s economy. This article does not consider the fact that even the safest businesses may see a drop in demand as people lose their jobs to AI, thus causing them to lose valuable purchasing power.
The ripple effect of this loss of purchasing power will be felt by every industry in the world. Nevertheless, it is better to have a job with reduced demand, than not to have a job at all.
